So far we’ve concentrated on the designer, but the designer needs insights too. Some orgs are small enough to allow designers to do their own research and validation, but as larger-sized organizations scale, research operations need to develop for the entire product organization. While supporting the designer with these operations, we also start to support communities within the organization. When the operations that initially only impacted a designer start to affect other teams, our initial image of a designer gets another layer. From the moment the designer is engaged in a hiring process, onboarding system, and day-to-day environment, this initial layer of processes becomes a primary responsibility of the operations organization. Some are more centralized, whereas others might have more atomic teams with a dedicated DesignOps person in each team.

It lets designers visualize their ideas, collaborate with team members, and effectively communicate design concepts. Operationally, decision making around design tools and processes need to be understood by a design leader rather than an IT department. Without DesignOps, cross-department collaboration is left to unstructured, meandering communication that only hinders output and efficiency. To leverage design systems for BBVA, Pilar notes they’re building BBVA Experience as a suite of products including project intake and discovery tools, brand assets, design resources, engineering resources, and the UI Studio. As a cost savings tool, the UI Studio provides standardized, reusable components, substantially reducing the time and effort to launch products to market. Standardization of processes will ensure that everyone follows the same procedures, which will lead to enhanced quality and greater efficiency in design work. Now that we’ve discussed the significance of Design Operations, let’s look at the fundamental roles that drive successful design projects. As we’ve previously written, the shape of a DesignOps practice can and should look very different from one organization to the next. There are a lot of components within DesignOps, and what an organization chooses to select — or to pass on — should depend on the current needs and most poignant pain points of that organization. It follows, then, that there are many perceived values of DesignOps, depending on what problems a design team or organization is focused on solving, as reflected in the research.
Before implementing an operational strategy, you’ll need to consider it within the context of your overarching business mission. It also includes training new team members planning, and tracking results using key performance indicators (KPIs). In a design org, the design program manager looks for ways to improve the team’s output and ability to contribute to organizational success. In a May 5, 2008, interview, Brian Michael Bendis indicated that the events of "House of M" play into the "Secret Invasion" storyline. The Skrull queen, still disguised as Jessica Drew, considered the resulting "Decimation" to be a boon to the Skrull's plans as they could now divert the part of their forces intended to deal with Earth's mutant population to other areas. Meanwhile, Xavier arranges a meeting of Super Heroes to decide the fate of Wanda Maximoff. Calling the Avengers, the X-Men and several lone heroes, a meeting ensues high atop Avengers Tower, presided over by Professor X himself. Emma Frost, reading the minds of all those in attendance, concludes that killing Wanda is the only way to end her destructive magic.
After a heated exchange, Hawkeye is killed for the second time as one of the Scarlet Witch's antagonized sons - who, as in Avengers Disassembled, are both conduits for Wanda's own troubled mind - uses his mutant powers to make the poor avenger non-existent again. Those heroes have since gotten better – but House of M also kicked off a web of interconnected event stories in which the heroes of the Marvel Universe were sent to ground as villains, divided, destroyed, and invaded. In 2004, Marvel Comics was looking to revitalize its Avengers franchise, which was flagging after a few years topping the charts thanks to still classic stories from creators such as Kurt Busiek, George Perez, Geoff Johns, Olivier Coipel, and many others. To do so, they tapped then up-and-coming writer Brian Michael Bendis, who was a few years into a high-profile relaunch of the entire Spider-Man mythos in the alt-universe Ultimate Spider-Man at the time. To explain House of M, you have to start at the events that led to it – starting with the destruction of the Avengers. Attempting to make sense of the strange world he finds himself in, Wolverine first seeks Professor X at the Xavier Institute for Higher Learning. He finds, however, a family who has lived in the mansion for fifteen years and who have no recollection of any Charles Xavier.
Each storyline/paperback contains a mostly standalone side story and can be read individually without any continuity problems. Wolverine and the Human Resistance awaken many heroes to the truth, including Cyclops, Spider-Man, Shadowcat, Doctor Strange, Iron Man, She-Hulk, Daredevil, Rogue, Mystique, Nightcrawler, Toad, and Spider-Woman. Hawkeye becomes distraught over learning of his death and briefly leaves the group. What they saw when they came there was Hawkeye's uniform and an article written by Kat Farell publicizing his death, leaving tears and a great sense of pride among his former teammates. Together with the Avengers, they tried making sense of what happened that night -- some of them remember, some don't -- only to be confronted by a distraught Doctor Strange bringing in the fact that the House of M really took place and its effects are slowly being felt on a wider scale. New York was back to normal when Layla Miller woke up from what she thinks must have been a lucid dream where she played an important part.

The heroes begin visiting the Avengers and X-Men in their new lives as Layla awakens their true memories. The implication of WandaVision's story from the brief trailer is that there is a reality-warping component to the show – something that would explain the rapidly changing setting, the presence of Kat Denning's Darcy, and potentially even the House of M Easter egg. After failing to convince the X-Men that they're trapped in an alt-reality – something they've experienced all too frequently – he turns to Luke Cage, Hawkeye (who is back to life in the House of M reality), and the human resistance, who wish to overthrow mutant rulership. Wolverine awakens them to the truth of their warped reality, and the group finally manages to convince some of the X-Men to join them – though not without plenty of cuts and bruises along the way. When the dust clears, Wanda is in bad shape in the hands of Magneto (then believed to be her father, in comic books – it's still not exactly clear what the deal is), with Professor X of the X-Men attempting to use his psychic powers to help her deal with her trauma.
Because of this, the world is a racist society, with mutants controlling governments, businesses, and culture, and humans (or "sapiens") are looked down on as inferior (essentially a reversal of the status quo in the mainstream Marvel Universe, where mutants are looked down on and despised instead). Wanda's children, William and Thomas, once thought to have been simple magical constructs of her imagination – were revealed to have been reborn as two mutant children, Billy Kaplan/Wiccan and Tommy Shepherd/Speed of the Young Avengers. Billy Kaplan is, of course, now the consort of Teddy Altman/Hulkling/Emperor Dorrek VIII of the Kree/Skrull empire – all of which was at the center of this summer's Empyre comic book event.
As Magneto is defeated, Scarlet Witch lashes out again, raging against both the manipulation by her father and by the marginalized status mutants experience in the real world. Deciding to end the whole thing once-and-for-all, Wanda casts one final spell – her most dire and destructive yet. Mutants have been a part of Marvel Comics lore since 1963, when Stan Lee and Jack Kirby introduced the X-Men - a team who have gone on to become some of the publisher's most enduring characters. In fact, Scarlet Witch was one of the earliest mutants created, debuting as a villain alongside Magneto in X-Men #4. Back at the Stark Tower, the Avengers sought possible explanations from whatever useful sort of media report they could get when they are interrupted by an abrupt appearance of someone in the Mansion's ruins.

Professor X informs Magneto that his power will no longer be enough to hold back Wanda and that a solution must be found. The Marvel Cinematic Universe miniseries WandaVision is inspired by the House of M storyline.
Some exceptions apply to "sapiens" who live with privileges like Carol Danvers (Ms. Marvel in Earth-616 continuity, but Captain Marvel in the World of M) and Peter Parker (Spider-Man). Danvers is widely known to be a "sapiens," while Spider-Man is believed by the House of M world at large to be a mutant. Bendis, the lead writer for the House of M event, stated that the series would "shake the world and break the Internet wide open."[3] Before the event, Bendis also mentioned in several interviews that the event would have a lasting effect on the Marvel Universe, but remained tight-lipped as to what.
Wolverine then sets out to find either Peter Parker or Tony Stark, the Iron Man. However, when he reaches the lobby of Stark Tower, he is stopped by his teammates in the elite Red Guards. He escapes, but is promptly contacted by his former New Avengers teammate, Luke Cage, when he is transported to the hideout of the "Human Resistance Movement" by Cloak.
While such designs are commonly and successfully used, especially in smaller experiments, their application can often be unrealistic or impractical in many settings. Let’s start with the basic 22 factorial design to introduce the effective use of blocking into the 2k design (Table 1). Let’s assume that we need at least three replications for this particular experiment. If one batch can produce enough raw materials for only four samples (experimental units), only one replication can be made from one batch. Therefore, three batches will be required to complete the three full replications for the 22 basic factorial design (Table 2).

Such interaction is likely caused by other biologically relevant factors that influence the effect of (some) treatments but that have not been accounted for in our experiment and analysis. It is important to distribute, as best one can,the different levelsof the treatment variables equally over the different levels of thecontrol variables. In case of substantial confounding, as when mostof the subjects receiving Placebo are Female and most of those receiving the Treatment are Male, it can become impossible to estimate the treatmenteffect. Similarly, when all Treatment subjects arein one batch and all Placebo in the other, batchand treatment are confounded and without a batch-independent referenceit is not possible to distinguish the treatment effect from a possiblebatch effect. Thus, it is important to account for control variablesin the experimental design and in the sample organization, and thiscan also be achieved using block randomization. The only systematic (non-random) differences in the observed responses result from differences between the treatments.
Missing Data
The blocking and confounding techniques in 2k factorial design of experiment is described in Video 1. In that sense, Latin Square designs are useful building blocksof more complex designs, see for example Kuehl (2000). In the most basic form, we assume that we do not have replicateswithin a block.
As we shall see, Latin squares can be used as much as the RCBD in industrial experimentation as well as other experiments. When we have a single blocking factor available for our experiment we will try to utilize a randomized complete block design (RCBD). We also consider extensions when more than a single blocking factor exists which takes us to Latin Squares and their generalizations. When we can utilize these ideal designs, which have nice simple structure, the analysis is still very simple, and the designs are quite efficient in terms of power and reducing the error variation. The single design we looked at so far is the completely randomized design (CRD) where we only have a single factor. In the CRD setting we simply randomly assign the treatments to the available experimental units in our experiment.
Robust parameter design is widely used as an effective tool to reduce process variability by appropriate selection of control factors to make the process insensitive to noise. In this paper, we propose and study a method for selecting the optimal blocked robust parameter designs when some of the control-by-noise interactions are included in the model. We then discuss how to search for the best designs according to this method and present some results for designs of 8 and 16 runs.
The row effect is the order of treatment, whether A is done first or second or whether B is done first or second. So, if we have 10 subjects we could label all 10 of the subjects as we have above, or we could label the subjects 1 and 2 nested in a square. This is similar to the situation where we have replicated Latin squares - in this case five reps of 2 × 2 Latin squares, just as was shown previously in Case 2. Consider a factory setting where you are producing a product with 4 operators and 4 machines.
2.3 Contrasts
A block is characterized by a set of homogeneous plots or a set of similar experimental units. In agriculture a typical block is a set of contiguous plots of land under the assumption that fertility, moisture, weather, will all be similar, and thus the plots are homogeneous. The first step of implementing blocking is deciding what variables you need to balance across your treatment groups. We should keep in mind that variance components are harder to estimate than averages, and estimates based on low replication are imprecise. This is not a problem if our goal is removal of variation from treatment contrasts, but sufficient replication is necessary if estimation of variance components is a primary goal of the experiment. Sample size determination for variance component estimation is covered in more specialized texts.

In practice, it is notalways possible or preferable to have thesame number of subjects in all groups of the treatment variable(s).18,19 The block randomization procedure with groups of different sizesis only slightly different. As before, first, blocks of samples whereeach group is proportionally represented are created. For example,if one group is twice as large as the other group, each block wouldconsist of three subjects, one of the smaller group and two of thelarger group (Figure Figure33A).
A common choice for blocking mice is by litter, since sibling mice often show more similar responses as compared to mice from different litters (Perrin 2014). Litter sizes are typically in the range of 5–7 animals in mice (Watt 1934), which would easily allow us to select three mice from each litter for our experiment. In contrast to a randomized complete block design, we cannot increase the number of blocks to increase the replication. With two levels of Sex fixed, we instead need to increase the experiment size by using multiple mice of each sex for each drug. Since Sex and Drug are fixed, so is their interaction, and all fixed factors are tested against the same error term from (Mouse). Each treatment occurs only once per block, and the variations due to interactions and residuals are completely confounded.
The degrees of freedom for error grows very rapidly when you replicate Latin squares. But usually if you are using a Latin Square then you are probably not worried too much about this error. The error is more dependent on the specific conditions that exist for performing the experiment. For instance, if the protocol is complicated and training the operators so they can conduct all four becomes an issue of resources then this might be a reason why you would bring these operators to three different factories. It depends on the conditions under which the experiment is going to be conducted.
A similar exercise can be done to illustrate the confounded situation where the main effect, say A, is confounded with blocks. Again, since this is a bit nonstandard, we will need to generate a design in Minitab using the default settings and then edit the worksheet to create the confounding we desire and analyze it in GLM. When I have time to think it through, I'll update this further with the appropriate fancy names for those experiment designs. You are studying how bread dough and baking temperature affect the tastiness of bread.
A special case is the so-calledLatin Square design where we have two blockfactors and one treatment factor having \(g\) levels each (yes, all of them!).Hence, this is a very restrictive assumption. In a Latin Square design, eachtreatment (Latin letters) appears exactly once in each row and once ineach column. If we ignore the columns of a Latin Square designs, the rows form anRCBD; if we ignore the rows, the columns form an RCBD.

Given all of that, there's a great chance that Wanda's powers will evolve to full-on manipulation of reality, and that her comic book origin as a mutant - something not shared by her MCU counterpart who gets her powers from an Infinity Stone – could come into play in the MCU another way over the course of WandaVision. It all backfires, however, when the Avengers and X-Men begin debating on whether they should kill Wanda, in fear of her powers going haywire and killing more people. Wanda Maximoff creates an alternate reality after Vision's death, although she only affects one town, Westview, instead of the whole world.[12][13] Her children also appear in both WandaVision and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Comic book precedent says that Wanda's reality-altering powers could include everything from empowering or depowering mutants, changing and creating alternate realities, and even bringing people back to life – or killing them. As a result of House of M, the Skrulls, who long sought to conquer Earth, saw an opening with the reduction in the number of mutants to strike, launching an insidious infiltration campaign to replace some of Earth's heroes including the Avengers, X-Men, and more, and take over the world. That story, Secret Invasion, led Spider-Man's one-time arch-enemy Norman Osborn (a.k.a. the Green Goblin) to become the leader of a new world security force titled HAMMER which replaced SHIELD after defeating the leader of the Skrulls. With that one phrase, Wanda Maximoff returned the Marvel Universe to normal – and simultaneously took away the mutant powers from all but 198 mutants, killing many as a result and depowering thousands, if not millions of mutants, including many well-known X-Men and villains. After this revelation, Emma Frost tells Strange to ask about the fate of Charles Xavier, but before he can Wanda is struck in the back by an arrow. The heroes can only guess what has caused the majority of the mutant population to lose their powers. Xavier is still missing, and Cerebro and Doctor Strange are unable to detect the Scarlet Witch. Hank Pym warns that all these powers could not simply vanish, but are contained somewhere and that because every action has an equal and opposite reaction, the question remains as to what the reaction to these events will be. These are mysteries Newsarama will solve right now, as we unpack the multiversal mutant madness that is House of M – a 2005 crossover event that gave mutants their own kingdom long before Krakoa (their current living mutant island sovereign nation), and almost drove them to extinction as a result. Meanwhile, the 'awakened' heroes travel to the S.H.I.E.L.D. helicarrier where Emma Frost uses her mental powers to commandeer a vehicle to take them to Genosha. While there, Cyclops informs the team that since the upcoming battle with Magneto may be the most important battle of their lifetimes, no one should restrict themselves or hold back in the least. This causes Jessica Drew to object -- if Magneto has given each of them everything they've ever wanted in this illusion, shouldn't they be content to just live in his world? An incredulous Luke Cage asks how did Magnus know what they wanted; Wolverine simply states that Charles Xavier, whom Magneto had kidnapped prior to the final transition into the House of M, would have the power to ascertain these desires. When Wolverine questions if the group believes his story, they say that yes, they do. Questioning why they believe him so easily when his story is so fantastic, Wolverine is presented with young Layla Miller, a mutant girl in the alternate world who awoke that morning to realize she had the power to show people the real world. Wolverine decides that the best way to proceed is to get all his former teammates together to kill Magneto and the rest of the House of M. Wolverine and the resistance then arrive, via Cloak's transporting power, at Emma Frost's home; Wolverine asks the young girl known as Layla Miller to "enlighten" Ms. Frost, just as she had previously done with Luke Cage. It is still unknown why Layla remembers the world before the change, but it is believed she is a mutant with the ability to see alterations in reality.
She learns the number of mutants in the world has dropped from millions to a few hundred. Spider-Man is distraught and angry with the fact that he still has memories of being married to Gwen Stacy and having a child together. Meanwhile, Wolverine awakens remembering everything about his past.[5] The X-Men fly to Genosha looking for Magneto and his children. They find Magneto is also powerless and does not know where Wanda or Quicksilver have gone.
The events of the storyline were later indicated to have occurred on Earth-58163. After enduring a less than pleasant security check from Hawkeye, Wolverine realizes that the Red Guard has followed the tracking chip that Hawkeye just removed from his neck. The room explodes and Wolverine's teammates storm the underground headquarters. In the middle of the battle, Cloak teleports everyone he can to the Kingpin's office, which he knew would be empty.
And of course, the Skrulls have played a key role in the MCU since their debut in Captain Marvel, including impersonating Nick Fury while he works on some kind of apparent space station. This event, called 'M-Day,' has colored X-Men stories for years since, with the direct ramifications still playing out in the 'Dawn of X' era, where mutants can be resurrected and their powers restored by powerful rituals and science. In the House of M reality, Magneto's eponymous 'house' includes Pietro, Wanda, Wanda's sons William and Thomas, and Magneto's other daughter Lorna Dane/Polaris.
The rest of the group decides that they must talk to Wanda in person before making their decision. In this world, Magneto was attacked by Sentinels in Manhattan in 1979 (taking advantage of Marvel's sliding timescale policy, no heroes were active in the 1970s). At the end of the attack, Magneto revealed an alleged international anti-mutant conspiracy involving Richard M. Nixon. As a result, Magneto was granted sovereignty of the island of Genosha as the leader of the world's mutants. Another result was that the protection of mutant life was judged to be the first worry of all laws (as a result, stem cell research on mutant embryos is illegal, but stem cell research on altered human embryos is permitted).
The Avengers come together to try to make sense of what happened that night, only to be confronted by a distraught Doctor Strange, who states that the "House of M" timeline really took place, and its effects are slowly being felt on a wider scale. Investigating, they find Hawkeye's uniform pinned to a wall with his arrows, suggesting Hawkeye is alive. Back in Genosha, Magneto receives representatives from around the world to commemorate the mutant triumph over humanity. The heroes attack Magneto and his family directly, while Cloak, Emma Frost, Doctor Strange, and Layla search for Xavier. They find a gravestone with Xavier's name, but Cloak discovers nobody buried beneath it. There are some clear potential answers to how incorporating aspects of House of M could play out in the MCU.
While the chaos ensues, the Scarlet Witch disappears from the battlefield only to be discovered by Doctor Strange in a tower with her children. The two begin to talk as Doctor Strange attempts to discover the origin of the madness that is happening. Wanda reveals the answer to him in a flashback from when Quicksilver confronted Magneto about the fate of Wanda.

Blocking in experimental design
The explanatory variables of interest are alsoreferred to as treatment variables, e.g., treatment, disease status,or tumor type. Where “i” is the index for replicates and “j” is the index for blocks within the replicates. In Design of Experiments, blocking involves recognizing uncontrolled factors in an experiment–for example, gender and age in a medical study–and ensuring as wide a spread as possible across these nuisance factors.

Then, under the null hypothesis of no treatment effect, the ratio of the mean square for treatments to the error mean square is an F statistic that is used to test the hypothesis of equal treatment means. If you are simply replicating the experiment with the same row and column levels, you are in Case 1. If you are changing one or the other of the row or column factors, using different machines or operators, then you are in Case 2. If both of the block factors have levels that differ across the replicates, then you are in Case 3. The third case, where the replicates are different factories, can also provide a comparison of the factories. The fact that you are replicating Latin Squares does allow you to estimate some interactions that you can't estimate from a single Latin Square. Sometimes several sources of variation are combined to define the block, so the block becomes an aggregate variable. Consider a scenario where we want to test various subjects with different treatments. The original use of the term block for removing a source of variation comes from agriculture. If the section of land contains a large number of plots, they will tend to be very variable - heterogeneous. First the individual observational units are split into blocks of observational units that have similar values for the key variables that you want to balance over.
